College Golf Recruiting Timeline
A year-by-year guide to navigating the recruiting process β from 8th grade to signing day.
8thβ9th Grade
Early Start- Start building your golf game and academic record
- Research college golf programs and divisions (D1, D2, D3, NAIA)
- Create a GHIN handicap index
- Begin tracking your scores and tournaments
- Focus on core academic courses that meet NCAA eligibility
- Target GHIN index: below 10 for D1 consideration
π‘ Starting early gives you 4β5 years to build your profile and tournament rΓ©sumΓ© before coaches evaluate you seriously.
10th Grade
Building Your Profile- Register for Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS)
- Start playing AJGA or regional junior tournaments
- Build your highlight video and golf rΓ©sumΓ©
- Begin informal research of programs and attend college golf camps
- Target GPA: 3.0+ recommended
- Start SAT/ACT preparation
- Begin compiling a list of 30β50 schools of interest
π‘ Sophomore year is the time to get competitive. Your tournament results this year become part of your recruiting profile.
11th Grade
Active Recruiting Year- September 1st: Coaches can now respond to your emails β START CONTACTING COACHES
- Register with NCAA Eligibility Center (eligibilitycenter.org)
- Send initial emails to 50β100 college coaches
- Attend college golf camps at target schools
- Take SAT/ACT β aim for target scores
- Schedule unofficial campus visits
- Narrow school list to 10β15 programs
- Continue building JGS and AJGA rankings
π‘ Junior year is the most critical year for recruiting. September 1st is a major milestone β be ready to contact coaches on that date.
12th Grade
Decision Time- Continue communicating with coaches β stay top of mind
- Take official visits (up to 5 for D1)
- Receive and carefully compare scholarship offers
- Make verbal commitment when ready
- Sign National Letter of Intent (NLI) β Early Signing Period: November
- Complete FAFSA for financial aid consideration
- Maintain grades and athletic eligibility through senior year

Post-Signing
Transition to College- Maintain grades and athletic eligibility
- Stay in regular contact with your future coach
- Attend summer workouts or team events if invited
- Prepare physically and mentally for college-level competition
- Complete all enrollment and financial aid paperwork
